Acupuncture For HIV/AIDS
William Wessel, Lic. Ac.

I have a strong passion for helping people who are HIV+.  I find it exciting to be able to use an ancient medicine such as acupuncture to treat a modern disease such as HIV or AIDS.  Acupuncture doesn't exactly treat the HIV itself, but it is proven to increase a person's immune system, making it extremely important for anyone living with HIV to consider.  Acupuncture is also widely used for the side effects due to HIV medications.  It helps with nausea and other digestive issues, as well as other side effects you might be having.  I have been treating HIV+ patients for several years and have seen all types of issues, such as headaches due to medications, shingles, skin conditions, or just to help people feel cooler.

HIV is a condition that adds heat to the body.  Most of my patients who are HIV+ tend to feel warmer than other people, and the joy of acupuncture is that it is a very self-regulating medicine, meaning that if you tend to be warm, it will cool you off.  (As a side note, if you are someone who is usually cold, it can help to warm you up.)  So with that, I strive to help my patients feel comfortable in their skin, and not just with their body temperature, but also with their body.

Learning that you have HIV can be overwhelming.  I take the time to be with my patients while they are going through this emotionally difficult time.  Acupuncture treats on a body, mind, and spirit level, making it a great resource for anyone, not just those people living with HIV or AIDS.  I have helped many people who became extremely sad or depressed due to contracting HIV.  If this sounds like you, call me at 617-922-1881 so I can discuss acupuncture with you.  ELEMENT Acupuncture and Wellness is located on Newbury Street in the Back Bay of Boston so I am very easy to get to by public transportation or by walking.

How Does Chinese Medicine Help with HIV?

So how does Chinese medicine, something that is thousands of years old, work on a modern disease such as HIV?  I know that Chinese medicine can seem somewhat of a mystery, but there is real science behind our diagnoses.  As an acupuncture practitioner, I see illness in a series of patterns, and it is these patterns of disharmony that need to be treated.  Not only for HIV, but for any condition--asthma, arthritis, acid reflux and so on.  For HIV, the toxic heat affects the spleen and stomach and causes deficiency in those organ systems.  Eventually this leads to other patterns such as Liver Qi stagnation.  (I know this must seem very confusing, but I spend plenty of time with you to discuss this so you can understand your treatments.)  Each person's response to HIV is different, leading to different illnesses along the course of your life.  Acupuncture can help to address each of them as they arrive.  That is what makes acupuncture so amazing, there are no drugs involved, and it remains totally natural the entire time, while at the same time helping you to feel better and live your life to the fullest.  I ensure that each treatment addresses your concerns by tailoring it to your needs.
