How Treatment Works
To treat any Qi imbalance, fine sterile needles will be inserted at specific acupuncture points along the meridian pathways. At ELEMENT Acupuncture and Wellness we use only the highest quality, disposable sterilized needles. William Wessel, your acupuncturist, will concentrate on points related to your symptoms and specific issues. His treatment plan for you will consist of treating your underlying imbalances according to Chinese medicine, and to provide you with relief from your symptoms. He will discuss the types of treatment you will receive, and your time line of care. Every treatment is different and is tailored to your needs on that particular day. He may include other therapies such as cupping, gua sha, moxibustion or zero balancing. Your actions are also a key component of your treatment plan. Focusing on your health and committing to a healthy lifestyle are the best steps you can take for your well-being. Even after your symptoms are resolved, acupuncture can assist you in maintaining your health and possibly prevent future imbalances. The more you incorporate acupuncture into your life, the more you'll learn to nurture your body, mind, and spirit. Since this system of health care may be different than other care you've received it's only natural to have questions. William is more than happy to answer your questions you might have. Give him a call at 617-922-1881 to discuss them with you. Acupuncture takes a holistic, or whole body approach to health. This means that your acupuncturist, William Wessel, will take into account your whole self (Body, Mind, and Spirit), not just your symptoms in order to get to the root of your health concerns. We will work together to find out how other factors such as your lifestyle and emotional and mental well-being may be affecting your health. Getting a chance to really discuss your health concerns with a health care provider, and having your provider listen, may be new to you. Think of it as your opportunity to form a partnership for better health.
Your First Visit
Your first visit may last longer than your follow up acupuncture treatments at ELEMENT Acupuncture and Wellness located on Newbury Street in the Back Bay of Boston. You should allow up to an hour and a half for the first visit, though it may not take that entire time. Your subsequent treatments will last approximately 50-60 minutes. Even though the treatments are shorter, William will continue to take your health history, check in with your symptoms, and provide you with a unique treatment plan. He will continue to ask you about your symptoms, eating, exercise, sleep, emotional states, and anything that may offer insight into your health. He will also employ diagnostic tools that are unique to acupuncture and Chinese medicine such as tongue and pulse diagnosis and smelling the back of your neck or low back. He will also look at your facial skin tone, eyes and nails. All of this will help him to tailor a perfect treatment for you.
After Your Acupuncture Treatment
For the best treatment results, keep a few things in mind: 1. Please show up on time. If you are more than 15 minutes late your appointment may need to be canceled and you may be charged a late cancellation fee. Unlike going to a regular doctor's office, acupuncturists schedule only one patient during a specific time slot and in back to back succession. If you are late it will not allow adequate time to check in with your symptoms and thus not enough time to treat you. 2. Don't eat a large meal right before your acupuncture treatment. A small meal or snack is fine. Also, don't arrive extremely hungry. Your treatment will be more effective if you have eaten something small some time before your visit. 3. Be sure to discuss any questions or concerns with William before your treatment. 4. Refrain from strenuous exercise for at least a few hours after your treatment. 5. Refrain from drugs, caffeine, and alcohol for at least 12 hours after your treatment. 6. Keep all your appointments, as each visit builds upon the previous one. By taking the right steps and planting the seeds of health you are on the road to a healthier you! If you have any questions about receiving acupuncture or want to schedule your first appointment at ELEMENT Acupuncture and Wellness located in the Back Bay of Boston call William Wessel now at 617-922-1881. He will take the time to assist you with any questions you might have. He returns all phone calls within a few hours so please leave a message if he is treating another patient.
